As Winter finally arrives the Blood Pressure Association warns of increased health risks in cold weather
As the UK continues to be gripped by freezing weather conditions, The Blood Pressure Association is warning people of the increased risk of stroke or heart attack in cold weather.
Some 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure, and it is estimated that a third of these are unaware of the fact so are not taking any steps to reduce it.
Blood pressure can increase in the cold, particularly in the elderly and high blood pressure is a killer.
It is responsible for 60% of strokes and 40% of heart attacks and the incidences of both go up in cold weather, resulting in needless deaths and disability.
The Blood Pressure Association is urging adults who don’t know their blood pressure numbers to get checked and to have elderly friends and family checked too. The test only takes a few minutes, is non-invasive and is a potential life saver.
Blood Pressure Association Chief Executive, Paul Newman says,
“As the leading UK charity dedicated to lowering blood pressure, we are always trying to raise awareness about the dangers of unchecked and untreated high blood pressure.
“This time of year can be more dangerous for some people due to the cold weather and we urge anyone who doesn’t know their blood pressure numbers to have a test.
“GP practices will test for free and many high street pharmacies offer tests too. When you go, take an elderly friend or relative too; it could be a lifesaver for them.”
